Working from home? Ensure your data is secure with these essential cybersecurity practices for remote employees.
1. Use a VPN
A Virtual Private Network encrypts your internet traffic, making it unreadable to anyone on the same network. This is especially important when working from cafés or shared Wi-Fi.
2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication
2FA adds a second verification step beyond your password. Even if your password is stolen, attackers cannot access your account without your phone or authenticator app.
3. Keep Software Updated
Software updates patch security vulnerabilities. Enable automatic updates for your OS, browser, and applications. Running outdated software is one of the most common ways attackers gain access.
4. Use Strong, Unique Passwords
Use a password manager like Bitwarden or 1Password to generate and store complex passwords. Never reuse the same password across multiple sites.
5. Lock Your Screen
Always lock your computer when stepping away (Windows+L or Ctrl+Cmd+Q on Mac). This is especially important in shared living spaces.
6. Beware of Phishing Emails
Attackers send convincing emails impersonating banks, IT departments, and even colleagues. Always verify unexpected requests via a separate channel before clicking links or downloading attachments.
7. Secure Your Home Router
Change your router's default admin password, use WPA3 or WPA2 encryption, and keep the firmware updated.
8. Use Encrypted Storage
Enable BitLocker (Windows) or FileVault (Mac) to encrypt your hard drive. If your laptop is stolen, your data remains protected.
9. Back Up Regularly
Follow the 3-2-1 rule: 3 copies of data, on 2 different media types, with 1 offsite (e.g. cloud). Ransomware attacks are far less devastating when you have clean backups.
10. Use Antivirus Software
A reputable antivirus provides real-time protection against malware. Windows Defender is competent for most users, but dedicated solutions offer additional layers of protection.
